It is a terrible tragedy. Any lifter, especially teens should have at least peer spotters and preferably a coach supervising. There have been some accidents in our area (one kid paralysed) while lifting on there on without the Football coach supervising. At home it is impossible for the coach to monitor and this kind of thing is easier to look back and see what should have been done. Maybe this young man's dad can make other kids and there parents aware of how important spotters are for safety and at least avoid it happening again. No one is immune to dropping a weight. No matter how much experience we are.

In regards to the speculations of a thumbless grip being at fault. I've seen about as many dropped thumbs around as thumbless. And most of the drops I've seen thumbs around were the ones that came out toward the face/throat (back over the fingers). Bottom line is we all need a spotter to be safe. We all have the sense to know it but we don't always do what we know. We may get away with it 99.9% of the time (as I'm sure this young man did) but the one time we don't can be tragic. My prayers and thoughts are with his family, friends and teammates.
