Box squats & board presses American in origin? *LINK*

In the following video (large file), Louie Simmons states his belief that box squats and board presses came to the original WBC via Europe, European track and field teams specifically that toured American cities including Culver City (see 11:13 to 11:35):

Does anyone know the origin of box squatting and board pressing and if that origin is American?
