The Oly lifters at the Dallas YMCA in the mid-fifties sometimes did box squats. I did them. 1955? This was about a year before Bill Starr began training there. (I never met him as I was gone to the Army by '56).
It's my impression that board use is relatively new. Remember, many lifters were doing much the same sort of training in the power racks before that, with pins at different heights. Lots of articles on power rack use in the mags in the '80s.
