Your recollection is correct; those are modified wrestling shoes. Thanks for the reference. A lifter on another forum described having this done:

"Got this idea from Priscilla Ribic, i did it to my shoes and i must say i like it a lot:

I just took my DL shoes into a local shoe place and had them do it. You basically want to have them remove the old sole of your shoe and replace it with the elevated sole. The actual height of the elevated shoe will be at the ball of your foot (not your toes). Other thing to pay attention to is that you don't elevated it too high, otherwise you end up just over compensating and end up were you were to begin with. Most often starting with a 1/2 inch elevation is good.

the guy who did mine glued a sole on top of the old ones, then he sanded them down. i stood right there and tried them on in between him sanding them down, telling him where and how much more to sand down. it's pretty cool, all your weight gets shifted back and it makes it a ton easier to keep your shoulders behind the bar."
