You did the right thing. If I were you I would visit gyms every now and then. I would do a workout once a month in a different gym just to meet other lifters. Once you get to know them you can let them in on the secret that your garage is the best gym in town. There are other fellow powerlifters out there they are just few and hard to find.

The best two gyms in my town are at my training partners house and at a garage gym where I have seen 800 lb bench pressers and crew train. I still train a lot at the gym but I split a some of my training time in the others.

If those guys dont have any more sense than to train with kids and alcohol in the same area then it will only get worse.
