In Response To: Olympics (Ron Fernando)

There was a man named Bob Hoffman, who was the father of modern Olympic lifting. He was the founder of York Barbell, in York PA, which was the center of lifting. In the 1920's USA dominated the sport, and then the Eastern Block countires started kicking our butts. Along came powerlfitng which completely took over the ineterest of olympic lifting and that started to kill their sport. Bob Hoffman stated powerlifting would never be in the olympic games, the eastern block countires voted to keep it out because we were the best. Bob died in the 70's and we are still not in. I became involved in PL in 1972, and have been waiting ever since. It's a shame because our venue is almost identical to theirs. I was told that is why they make IPF lifters squat so low, to follow the Olympic lifting tradition. When i started it was only AAU, and we were judged by Olympic lifting officials that hated our sport, and tried their best to make our lives miserable. I think one of the reasons for keeping us out is we have 100 feds, instead of one, with a million different rules. Maybe if we could one day have a unified nationals that we all agreed to we could make this a better sport.... One can dream...
