Thoughts On Phelps' 8 Golds,,,,

Meaning no criticism of Phelps' great performance, but my brief study of various medal opportunities at the Olympics leads me to believe that few athletes have a chance of matching his haul, except other swimmers. That is, team players - basketball, soccer, volleyball etc can win a bunch of games and get only one medal. Weightlifters can win only one based on total.

Some sports like diving, gymnastics, cycling, track and field etc do provide a chance for multiple Golds. -Bolt of Jamaica has won three, but what more could he do? Enter the mile, marathon, walk-race, and throw the shot?

The media makes much of Phelps' greatness, with cause, but isn't the situation such that few athletes have a chance to match him, except other swimmers? The media has not picked up on this.

Any thoughts?
