We all have our faults

In Response To: WABDL enough is enough (Dr. Don Bell)

Posting is not something I do often however when I see slanderous and negative postings about my friend, Gus Rethwisch, I feel it is only fair you hear from the other side, from someone who really knows the man.

Gus is extremely passionate about his federation, WABDL, and the sport of powerlifting. He always gives back to the lifters by providing the highest quality meets and venues all over the country.
Last winter, Gus had open heart surgery and spent 21 days in the hospital. When he told me he was still taking the month of March to drive 5000 miles and put on four meets, I told him that I would make the trip with him to help.
Ten days after he left the hospital, I flew from Maine to Minnesota and against doctor’s orders we loaded his little truck with 1500 pounds of gear (weights, platform material, bars, etc.). You might ask why this is important. When you pack a little ¼ ton pickup with gear and two six foot four inch tall guys and drive for a 5000 miles together, you really get to know each other. The trip began with a meet in Missoula, Montana followed by meets in Pasco, Washington; Chico, California and ending in Dallas, Texas.
The one time he was upset on our trip was when one of the co-chairs in Washington did not show for the meet in his own state. Joe Mickelson was there, as always, and Ryan Connolly and Randy Patterson made the trip to Pasco just to see Gus and wish him well. Why, when he really needed help in Pasco, would one of the state chairs not show up?
Some people do, some people talk and worst of all some people feel the need to put others down. Before you judge others, be sure you know all the facts. We all have faults and Gus is no exception but who are we to judge and name call?
Gus’ passion and love for the sport of powerlifting is what should count. He has made WABDL into one of the very best federations out there.
Thank you Gus for all you do. We are lucky to have you.

Al Stork, Maine WABDL State Chair
