Is powerlifting about championships, or numbers

To me it is numbers. Maybe 15 years ago or 20, it would have been about championships. But today championships come a dime a dozen, but the huge numbers don't. Now days anybody, can win a championship, or break a federation record. But very few can make people say, damn that is unbelieveable, awesome lifting !!!
