I just can't believe this happened.
A 404 total... That's one of the best totals ever by an American SHW. The SHWs are the glamour division of the sport (no offense to lighter weight classes, but that's the way it is and I didn't make the rule), and the best lifter in America is a SHW, and he's not going to get to compete. What an absolute shameful disgrace for the United States, especially since he's been carrying our national team on his back for the last year.
Has the US ever sent a team to the Olympics without a SHW?
Mike, I've known you for many years and I've watched Casey grow up as a man and a weightlifter. I'm truly sorry this happened. Your son is the victim of the worst moment I've ever heard about in American weightlifting. (And yes, I know what happened to Bob Bednarski in 1968)
All I can say is that I hope Casey continues lifting for four more years. I've heard that he's thought of hanging it up after this Olympics. But he's too damn good to walk away from this sport without making an Olympic Team. Even if he does retire now, he's a great lifter and nothing will ever change that. But as an athlete myself, I would just love to see him come back in four years and stick this moment up everybody's ass.
I'm sorry, my friend. I can only imagine how pissed off you must be.
