In Response To: Historic 501 lb C&J by CAMERON (Michael Caravalho)

Thanks for the kudos Mike. I made this C&J January 13, 1980 in Allentown PA, a few days before the Olympic boycott was announced. The meet was a meet set up for Mack Truck with a Canadian and two US teams. A third country was invited but did not attend.

I had just moved back from California and hadn't really trained much for six weeks. I doubt I did more than eight workouts or so. In fact when John Terpak called me the Wednesday before the meet I initially refused but as it was a fund raiser he prevailed upon me to come and just do token lifts. I had done 492 in Tokyo in November and jerked 529 off the rack in Thessaloniki the month before. I typically overtrained so badly that this forced rest was an unforseen benefit.

I weighed 238 had planned on doing 352 and 462 and call it a day. The warmups went well and I made 352, 369, missed 380 in front and then behind. In the C&J I started with 462 went to 492 on a second for an AR then proceeded to cut the pull on 501. On a fourth attempt I just refused to miss. Norb Schemansky was there and it was important to end the meet with a success for Mack Truck. The rack was a little off so I came half way up and then squatted back down to regain balance and stood up. The jerk was OK with a little stagger. This was the sixth time I had tried 501 in a meet. Being Bob Bednarski's successor at the Central Falls Weightlifting Club it was important that I made this weight, for Joe and myself. The weight felt no different than anyone else's PR, heavy.

Local TV pre-empted this show for a Celtics game, no one in my home town saw it. It would have helped as I was looking for a job at the time, oh well Byrd did play a good game.

I was once told by a now-coach who regularly posts on this forum that I never had to learn how to jerk because my jerk was so easy. I'm still trying to figure that one out. Maybe when I do I can be a coach.

I believe the jerk is 90% technique. I was taught by Joe Mills, a true coach and a true man. I won't attempt to describe it online but catch me at a meet some time, it will take five minutes to show you. It's a lot simpler than it's taught today. It will cost a beer however, I have my standards to uphold.

I typically never C&J'd in training, maybe once a month. I only did cleans. Jerks from the rack every couple of months. I did seated presses behind the neck regularly and believe strongly in front and overhead supports.

A bit of trivia; Jim Curry, BUTCH! and Nick's dad was the head referee for the meet. He had to give me the down signal three times. It took so long to get it overhead I wasn't very anxious to put it down.

Thanks again Mike

But who is Mr. Bumbles?
