Mike, I was at my mothers house and found an old "Prentice-Hall" Physical Education Handbook,4th Printing 1961. My dad had a few old Physical Education and Athletic Trainers books and handbooks since he was the high schools athletic trainer during the 60's. As I was scanning thru some chapters, this handbook had a workout for every sport known, from scuba diving, shuffle board, touch football, ect... When I got to weightlifting, there was a lift that I haven't heard about and appears to be a toughie. The lift, "Teetotum." Here is how the exercise is performed.
***********
Teetotem -- Stand erect, with the bar at arms length and with a wide stance. Bend and place the barbell on the floor next to the one foot and at right angles to the starting position of the bar. Return to up-right position and bend to opposite side. Do not turn the feet to aid in the body twist.
***********
Lifting Certificate offered:
The beginning competitor must be able to clean and jerk a weight equal to his bodyweight, and to press and snatch a weight 80% of his bodyweight. The competitive lifters must be able to accomplish these exercises before being awarded a weightlifting certificate. I have never heard of this certificate. I would have been only 5 years of age. Did any one that you know of ever receive such a certificate of accomplishment?

Also in this 340 page handbook, the competitive lifts were discussed. The Military Press was used as a description. I had no idea that during the press, one had to hold the bar motionless at the shoulders for two seconds, before pressing the weight overhead. Once the bar was overhead and motionless, the bar had to be held for another two seconds. This is the only book that I have seen or read that actually put a time limit on how long you had to hold the bar at shoulders and at the overhead segments. I remember we used to think we had to hold the bar on the chest for three seconds during the Bench Press but, never have seen that rule in writing like described in this handbook.
