Lose the neck pad. If your going to compete there wont be one there. If you find it painful, and you will, that pain will just go away, eventually. One way to help with this is don't put the bar on your neck, put it across your shoulders. I put the bar down where the bar rests across my rear delts, this also allows you to have more surface area to balance the bar on. There are some good articles on elitefts.com about how to set up for the squat. Just go to the articles tab and look at the powerlifting articles. westside-barbell.com has great articles also, and on westside you don't have to sift through a bunch of personal training articles.
And just in case you show up at our gym we'll tell you to take the tampon off the bar:)_
