Boards will help a raw bench, but due to the stimulation (amount of weight) being less, more reps should be used. As an example, if I were to train for a raw bench of 400, from my current 365, I would rep 425 - 450 off of 2 0r 3 boards. No more than 5 reps, though. As the reps approached 6, I would just lower the boards, perhaps even using some 3/4". With a raw bench, there is no need for massive overload, but rather, a bit more depth, repwise, to get enough stimulation for strength increase. The whole point is to get the stimulation of more weight, with less wear and tear,. aiding recovery and growth.
